Coffee and tea on aeroplanes ‘is full of faecal bacteria’, flight attendant claims

This week, Britain reeled in horror at the news that iced coffee in major High Street chains is full of faecal bacteria.

But sadly, it seems that the problem is more widespread – and you might want to think twice about having coffee or tea on a plane.

It’s enough of a problem that flight attendants won’t drink hot water, coffee and tea on planes – because they know what’s in it.

Hot water on planes tends to come from hot water tanks, rather than from a kettle.

One flight attendant told Business insider, ‘Flight attendants will not drink hot water on the plane. They will not drink plain coffee, and they will not drink plain tea.’

The reason they’re picky is two EPA studies from 2004 and 2012 – which found that 12 percent of samples of hot water on planes had ‘coliform’ bacteria in them, ie faecal bacteria.

Despite new hygiene regulations, the figure is still high, the EPA warns.

The study said that the levels of coliform is an indicator ‘that other disease-causing organisms (pathogens) may be present in the water and could potentially affect public health.’
