Coltness High pupil one of the winners at North Lanarkshire Young Musician of the Year

Seventeen young musicians representing North Lanarkshire’s secondary schools gathered at St Ambrose High School in Coatbridge for the highly anticipated Young Musician of the Year competition.

The event, which took place on Thursday, May 18, allows the very best talent from secondary schools across the area to showcase their skills and compete for the prestigious title.

The two judges, Jim Park and Julie Brown, had the tough job of selecting a winner.

Kurtis Fang, an S2 pupil at Coltness High School was named the overall winner of North Lanarkshire’s Scottish Young Musician-Solo Performer of the Year.

He performed a Beethoven piano sonata in D minor and the judges were blown away by his outstanding performance.

Kirk Richardson, Instrumental Music Service Lead Officer, explained: “Kurtis will now represent North Lanarkshire in the Scottish Young Musician Final, to be held at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on Sunday 26th May 2024.

“The event promises to be exciting, with some of the most talented young musicians from all over Scotland competing for the title.”

The runners-up were equally impressive, with Chryston High School S6 pupil Ruaridh Prentice magnificently performing Johan Baptiste Neruda’s trumpet Concerto, and St Margaret’s High School S5 pupil Connor Marshall performing Island Magic by Dave Weckl with a superb display of drumming.
