Comedian Janey Godley has revealed she has ovarian cancer and has urged anyone with symptoms to get checked.

The 60-year-old, best known for her sketches about Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, revealed the news on social media on Friday.

Sharing a photo of herself in a hospital bed, Godley told fans the last two dates in her tour would not be going ahead as she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

In a video she said: “I want to thank everyone for all their support and their help and coming out and sharing all the laughter with me.

“Onto the next step of my journey and what is that journey? I don’t know if I’m going to be one of these people who battle bravely, who fight every step, I don’t know.

"That doesn’t feel how I’ve been the last day, I’ve done nothing but cry and cry and cry.

“But I’m going to use science, I’m going to use technology and I’m going to try and cope with this next step on the journey.”

The award-winning comic said went to the doctor because she had no energy, was feeling full before meals and had a “big bloatiness” inside her stomach.

“Onwards and upwards. I want everyone to know I really appreciate them for being behind me for so long,” she added, thanking the “unbelievably brilliant” NHS.

Godley was due to appear at theatres in Edinburgh and Musselburgh on Friday and Saturday.

The comic earned legions of fans with her parodies of Sturgeon’s coronavirus news briefings, and even went onto feature in the Scottish government’s public health campaign.

She was later dropped from the role after past offensive tweets came to light, and donated her fee for appearing in the adverts to charity.
