Comely Bank Edinburgh: Police and bomb squad scrambled after 'grenade found in garden'

An Edinburgh street has been taped off by police and the bomb squad after officers received a report of a grenade having been discovered in the garden of a property.

Images from Comely Bank Road show the street locked down with a heavy police presence scrambled to the scene. A Boots pharmacy has also been taped off by officers.

Police are reportedly not letting traffic of pedestrians down the busy street as rush hour approaches, with several Lothian Bus services also subject to diversions until the scene has been cleared.

Edinburgh Live understands a grenade was discovered by people digging in a garden on the street.

According to Police Scotland, officers were made aware of a potential item of ordnance on Comely Bank Road shortly after 3pm on Tuesday afternoon, July 2. Road closures are in place and members of the public have been urged to avoid the area.

The force said: "We were made aware of a potential item of ordnance at Comely Bank Road in Edinburgh around 3.15pm on Tuesday, 2 July. Road closures are in place as a precaution and we would urge people to avoid the area while emergency services work in the area."

Lothian Buses added services 24 and 29 will also be diverted in the meantime. The travel operator wrote: "Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve Comely Bank Road and are instead diverted via East Fettes Ave and Carrington Road in both directions until further notice."
