Company selling reusable products saves billions of items from ending up in waste

A company has saved billions of items from ending up in landfill over the last eight years.

Cheeky Wipes, in Newhaven, said its reusable products have saved about six billion wet wipes alone from the waste since 2016.

In addition, it has kept about 263 million other items from landfill in the past eight years .

The company calculated the figures ahead of Plastic Free July.

Cheeky Wipes has also saved around 134 million single use sanitary products, 110 million packets of disposable baby wipes and five million pairs of disposable breast pads and nappies.

It also estimated that since 2016, 15 million packs of disposable makeup removing wipes have been kept from landfill thanks to its efforts.

Cheeky Wipes founder Helen Rankin said: "This is a monumental increase in the number of single-use hygiene and period products that we've saved from going in a landfill or elsewhere in the environment, such as the ocean.

"Consumers are getting on board with the fact that reusables are a easy, sustainable alternative to the huge array of plastic, expensive, uncomfortable, ineffective and wasteful disposable options out there.

"The number of wet wipes alone saved is staggering, almost six billion wet wipes have been saved from polluting our world.”

In 2021, Cheeky Wipes was honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development for its reusable products.

Helen said: "It’s a team effort. Our fabulous Cheeky customers have stood up against the wasteful cultural ‘norms’ of disposable products. They’ve really made this possible.

"We look forward to helping even more customers save money and the planet during this plastic free July and ongoing."

Cheeky Wipes was set up in 2008 with the launch of its reusable wipes kit.

Since then it has extended its product range to include beauty products, period products and underwear.
