Confederate Flags Flown in Charleston to Protest Activist Speaker

Confederate flags have been flown across downtown Charleston, South Carolina, since Sunday, February 19, to protest a local college’s decision to host activist Bree Newsome on Wednesday.

Newsome is known for her arrest in 2015 for removing the confederate flag from the South Carolina State House grounds – an act that ultimately pressured the local administration to remove the controversial flag permanently.

On Monday, Charleston officials said that the flags must be removed from the downtown area. Credit: Twitter/@kizunache via Storyful
