Coventry City have officially confirmed that Matty Godden has been sold to Charlton Athletic, bringing an end to five years at the club – a period in which manager Mark Robins says the striker made a “significant contribution” to the club's rise up the leagues.

The 32-year-old passed his medical and agreed personal terms with the League One Addicks earlier this week and today signed a two year deal at The Valley, with an option for a third year. The Sky Blues paid Peterborough United around £750,000 for the player in 2019.

He moves for an ‘undisclosed’ fee, understood to be a relatively modest figure that could rise to a maximum of £400,000 based on the usual add-ons, including appearances and promotion.

Confirming the move, a City statement said: “The Sky Blues would like to place on record its thanks and appreciation to Matty for his service to the club since joining in 2019 from Peterborough United. Matty has been an exemplary professional both on and off the pitch and everyone at Coventry City wishes him the best of luck for the future.”

Godden played 156 games for Coventry City and scored 50 goals, putting him 21st in the club’s list of all-time top scorers. After joining in August 2019, Godden claimed 14 goals in 26 games to help fire the Sky Blues to the 2019/20 League One title.

He then netted City’s first goal back in the Championship and continued to feature regularly in the second tier of English football – including playing a key role as City reached the Championship play-off final in 2022/23, plus reaching the FA Cup semi-final in 2023/24.

Manager Mark Robins added: “Matty has made a significant contribution to our rise up the leagues, including being integral to our League One title win and then establishing ourselves in the Championship. He will be fondly remembered by Sky Blues supporters for many years to come for what he has achieved here, and we wish him the best of luck for the future.”

Sky Blues owner Doug King added his own tribute. He said: “Matty has been a fantastic servant to Coventry City and an important part of the club’s journey. He is an exemplary professional.”
