Katie Hopkins axed from radio show on LBC after 'final solution' tweet in wake of Manchester attack

Controversial broadcaster Katie Hopkins has been axed from LBC, the radio station has said.

On Friday LBC announced it and Ms Hopkins, 42, have agreed that she will leave the radio station immediately.

The media personality and columnist has in the past sparked outcry with comments over terrorism and Islam as well as for remarks mocking Russell Brand, princes William and Harry and Jack Monroe.

Despite always being known for her controversial views, the backlash peaked last week when she called for a "final solution" following the Manchester attack.

The tweet, which appeared to echo the Nazi's Final Solution during the Holocaust, was quickly deleted but many people reported Ms Hopkins to police via the social media site.

It followed other comments made in the wake of March's Westminster terror attack when Ms Hopkins said: "And Ramadan has not yet begun. Without food these sods get nasty."

The announcement of her departure came on Friday morning, when LBC posted on Twitter: "LBC and Katie Hopkins have agreed that Katie will leave LBC effective immediately."

Responding to the news, one listener wrote: “Disgraceful!! Free speech LBC style! Political correctness gone mad! We [heart] You @KTHopkins.”

But another replied: “Good. I'm a huge supporter of free speech and the right to offend but "a final solution" was neither. It was disgusting incitement.”

Left-wing columnist and author Owen Jones called it a victory against hatred.

Ms Hopkins is still a regular columnist writing controversial comment pieces for the Daily Mail online.

Minutes after news she was leaving LBC emerged, she posted a link promoting an upcoming piece for the website: "My column on Corbyn, exchanging dead kids for the terrorist sympathising vote-block, posting here soon @MailOnline."

The Devon-born public figure rose to fame on TV show The Apprentice in 2006 before securing media slots including her weekly two-hour Sunday show on LBC.

In March last year she underwent brain surgery to cure her of epilepsy, which she said had "plagued her life".

More recently she was forced to pay £24,000 in damages to food blogger and anti-poverty campaigner Jack Monroe for a defamatory tweet.

The response to her departure from the radio show continued to be mixed with some claiming it was an attack on free speech.

But another Twitter user, James Ellaby, said: "A reminder about free speech - Katie Hopkins is free to say whatever she wants. LBC are free not to want to pay her to say it."

London David Lammy, Labour candidate for Tottenham, said: "Good riddance."

Following the complaints raised about Ms Hopkins' latest tweet, a spokesman for the Met said on Tuesday they were reviewing and assessing the allegation.
