Discovering your newly purchased bottle of wine tastes like vinegar is a let-down we've all experienced. But if the thought sends shivers down your spine, there's no need to panic a viral hack circulating on social media claims to transform subpar wine into a drinkable delight.

While TikTok and Instagram are abuzz with this 'new' trend, it's actually an old trick being rediscovered by a fresh audience. Despite leaving many social media users impressed, some have decried the method as a "crime" against good booze, reports the Mirror.

The technique in question has evolved into a bona fide cocktail known as Kalimotxo, hailing from the 1920s in Algorta's Old Port, part of Spain's Basque country. The concoction is simple: mix red wine with cola for a surprisingly smooth tipple.

Legend has it that festival organisers, faced with poor quality wine, decided to mix in cola to salvage it. Their gamble paid off, finding that the sugary soda balanced the wine's acidity perfectly.

One TikTok user, Golden Hive Mead, shared their own experiment with the hack, they said: "Apparently all you need is Coke and red wine. I do feel like I'm committing a crime adding this to ice, but I need to follow the rules here. So it's supposed to be a 50/50 mix and you can use any cheap wine.

"But now let's give this a taste. It was actually surprisingly good, and I understand the hype. It kind of reminds me of a fruity rum and Coke a little bit. But definitely just give it a try yourself."

People in the comments were not happy with the beverage hack. A user said: "I was a bartender, and this is a pretty common drink. Have you tried lemonade and beer? It's called a 'shandy'. That's a bit wild too."

Then another said: "No thanks!" Over on Instagram, the account Cocktails offered its own version with a post: "Turning sour into wow-er. Sip happens, but we've got you covered!"

They demonstrated adding a spoonful of sugar to a glass of wine, rather than fizzy cola, suggesting the outcome was strikingly alike.

A response came in the comments: "Oh, no. No ma'am. If your wine is that bad you either *kindly* send it back or you order a better glass. PS. Never do this in Italy they would rather give you the wine for free than watch this homicide take place at the table."
