Cooling Towers Demolished as German Nuclear Power Plant Continues 'Energy Transition'

Two cooling towers were demolished at a former nuclear power plant in Philippsburg, Germany, on May 14 as the country continued its move towards renewable energy.

Targeted blasts initiated the demolition at the Energie Baden-Wurttemberg (EnBW) plant, which has been out of operation since last year. The towers were destroyed to make room for a substation which will, EnBW said, be an important hub for the local distribution of electricity from renewable sources.

EnBW did not announce the date of the demolition to prevent crowds gathering to watch it, as state coronavirus regulations in Baden-Wurttemberg prohibit gatherings of more than five people. Credit: EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG via Storyful
