Cornish primary school raises its Ofsted rating from good to outstanding

A primary school in St Agnes has achieved an 'Outstanding' Ofsted rating across the board.

St Agnes Academy in Trelawney Road was given the illustrious rating following an inspection on May 1 and May 2.

It is an increase on the school's last inspection, when it was rated 'Good'.

Inspectors found pupils at St Agnes Academy to be "curious, compassionate and courageous."

The report paints a picture of a thriving educational environment with a "rich, exciting curriculum that extends well beyond the academic."

Inspectors noted the school's exceptional reinforcement programme and inclusive approach that encourages participation from all pupils, including those who are disadvantaged and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

The academy, headed by Jess Mills, serves the educational needs of 359 pupils and is part of the Kernow Learning Multi Academy Trust overseen by CEO, Clare Crowle, and a board of trustees.

Ms Mills's leadership of the school's behaviour standards was also commended by Ofsted.

Inspectors found that "pupils’ behaviour is exemplary," attributing this to high standards set by adults in the institution from a young age.

Pupils were found to be respectful of each other, fostering a positive learning space that allows them to excel.

Furthermore, inspectors found that St Agnes Academy had a robust and effective partnership with parents.

The school places great emphasis on life skills like punctuality and regular attendance, which pupils understand will be beneficial to their future.

The report admired the school's well-designed and ambitious curriculum.

The focus on character development and understanding of pupils' Cornish heritage are key elements of their curriculum.

Inspectors found the reading and mathematics elements "highly effective."

The academy has also been lauded for its dedication to inclusivity.

Ofsted inspectors found that provisions were in place to ensure pupils with physical disabilities or medical conditions can take part fully in school life.

This extends to adaptations for field trips and residential visits, creating an environment free of barriers to academic and extracurricular pursuits.

Inspectors found that St Agnes Academy is committed to educating pupils on equality and difference.

This comprehensive education extends to appreciating different cultures, challenging stereotypes, and understanding discrimination.

The executive leadership of the school, including headteacher Ms Mills, the Board of Trustees, and the CEO of the Trust, were noted to work effectively with the school in the evaluation of the school's work.

Their commitment to staff development and their value in the organisation earned high regard from the inspectors.

The safeguarding arrangements at the academy were also found to be effective, demonstrating the institution's dedication to creating a safe and positive learning environment for its pupils.
