Coronation Street airs shock fire incident in Carla and Stephen story

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street fans were ready to protest after tonight's episode (March 17) saw Carla suffer yet again at the hands of Stephen.

Over the past few weeks, Carla has been struggling with reality, unaware Stephen has been dropping LSD into her drinks to make her seem unable to perform her duties.

After the Underworld boss took a turn for the worse, seeking medical advice for her hallucinations, Stephen managed to convince her husband Peter that all Carla needed was rest.

Feeling better and returning to work, Carla told her husband, Stephen and the rest of the factory workers that it was a blip, but promptly managed to accidentally smash a mug and cut herself.

Later, Carla went to see Dr Gaddas for a follow-up, and was far from pleased when told to take an extended break and antipsychotic drugs.

Forcing herself to rest, Carla managed to fall asleep when she returned home, but a sinister Stephen was lurking.

Taking his plans to the next level, Stephen used the keys he swiped from the factory to enter Carla's flat.

Once he saw his struggling boss asleep, he headed to the kitchen, turned the grill on and left without a trace.

Enter neighbourly Roy, who stopped by at Peter's request only to find the flat filled with smoke.

Roy managed to extinguish the fire from the grill, which a groggy Carla denied turning on.

Fearing she was on the verge of another psychotic breakdown, Carla agreed to check herself into a psychiatric clinic.

Stephen seized the opportunity and, needing little convincing, the factory workers agreed with his plans to running the factory with Sarah in "Carla's best interest".

Has Carla met her match, and will Stephen manage to stay at the top at Underworld?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
