Coronation Street fans were left aghast last night after the shows storyline involving child grooming took a dramatic and dark turn.
Bethany Platt, at the centre of the latest storyline involving under-age grooming and sex rings, lost her virginity to abuser Nathan Curtis after his friend Mel spiked the 15-year old and got her drunk at a nightclub.
Viewers saw Bethany, played by actress Lucy Fallon, undressed in Nathan’s bed after being taken to his flat.
Leaving her in his bed, viewers saw Nathan answer a telephone call – presumably from someone within the sex-ring of which he’s a member of.
It made for uncomfortable viewing.
He told the person on the other end of the line: “Of course it worked, like a dream as it goes.
"No, you can’t rush it, don’t I always?
"Believe me, I am going to get my investment back and then some.
"Look I’ve got to go but remember what I said – this girl is special, yeah?”
After calling out for her so-called ‘boyfriend’ viewers saw Bethany looking groggy while Nathan crawled back into the bedroom.
Corrie writer Jan McVerry has revealed that the show’s passionate writers have been in rows over how to get it right.
“My own children are teenagers but others with very young children have asked ‘should we be going into this darker territory?’” she told the Daily Star.
“We have had many discussions on how to tell the story.”
Viewers will have to wait until next week to see how the storyline plays out.
