Coronation Street fans were taken aback on Wednesday when they recognised the new character, Roscoe, played by Warren Donnelly.

Roscoe made his debut in Wednesday's episode, entering Roy Cropper's prison cell and claiming to be an ally. With Roy wrongfully imprisoned for Lauren Bolton's murder, he has kept a low profile in his cell.

Roscoe introduced himself in the latest episode, causing Roy to feel threatened as he ordered him to leave. However, Roscoe revealed that they shared a mutual friend and that he was there to support Roy at someone else's request. He informed Roy that he was an old friend of his neighbour, Stu Carpenter, who had asked him to look after Roy in prison. Roy was moved by this gesture and expressed his gratitude to Stu, who confirmed Roscoe's account.

Viewers were distracted during these scenes as they immediately recognised actor Warren Donnelly from Shameless, where he portrayed Stan Waterman from 2004 to 2010. Warren has also featured in Moving On in 2011, Holby City, Cold Feet, and Doctors, reports the Mirror.

He will be reuniting with former co-star Sally Carman, who plays Abi Webster on Coronation Street and previously starred as Kelly Maguire in Shameless. Other Shameless alumni in Corrie include Ciaran Griffiths, who portrayed Damon Hay and left the show earlier this year.

On Twitter, viewers were quick to recognise a familiar face, with one person commenting: "It's Stan from Shameless #Corrie", while another tweeted: "Remember this guy was a cop in Shameless...#corrie". A third shared: "The copper Stan from shameless #Corrie" and yet another quipped: "Nice to see Roy get a shameless friend in Roscoe #Corrie @itvcorrie."

This comes as some fans expressed their excitement at seeing Roy with a prison mate, though others questioned the sincerity of the new character on Wednesday's episode. The sudden interest in Roy from the newcomer has led some viewers to speculate about his true intentions.

Some fans have taken to social media to theorise that he might be secretly linked to the returning villain Griff. Griff, previously involved with a far-right extremist group, is poised to confront Roy in jail over the supposed murder of Lauren, being an associate of Lauren's father.

With this development, there's growing suspicion among viewers that Roscoe could be connected to Griff and his gang, and despite his acquaintance with Stu, he might also have plans to target Roy.
