Coronation Street's David Platt is set to have a one-night stand with a newcomer as he struggles to come to terms with his rape ordeal.

David – played by Jack P. Shepherd – was spiked and attacked by Josh Tucker at his supposed-pal’s flat in scenes aired last Friday.

In the aftermath, David struggles to cope with his sexual assault which will see his relationship with Shona Ramsey suffer, before he eventually calls time on their romance.

David will sleep with young hairdressing intern Emma in an attempt to “reassert his masculinity”.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, producer Kate Oates said: “After what he has been through, David’s head is all over the place and nobody knows what is going on with him.

“When he meets this young newcomer, it’s almost like he’s trying to find a way to hide in plain sight. In his mind, he feels that he has to prove his manhood.”

Oates – who used to head up Emmerdale – continued: “By this point, he has finished things with Shona and she is completely bewildered over what has gone wrong between them.

“David’s life has been turned upside down and the ways he tries to deal with his bottled up torment are very self-destructive and may serve to push his loved ones even further away.”

Oates said that David makes this “big mistake” to try and make a point that he can “get girls” and shy away from what has happened to him.

David’s harrowing storyline has helped spark a rise in talking about male sexual assault, with Survivors Manchester – the charity consulting the storyline – revealing a 1,700 per cent increase in calls after the scenes aired.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
