Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has said she's planning to stop “hiding away” now that she has turned 60.

The actor, who is best known for playing Eileen Grimshaw on the ITV soap, celebrated the milestone last year. Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine, she said that after years of being focused on being a mum she saw the next decade as being for her.

As part of that, she is swapping the cobbles for the convent as she plays Mother Superior in the UK tour of the show Sister Act.

What, how, and why?

“I feel very much on a journey,” Cleaver told host Lorraine Kelly. “I brought my son up and my priority was always my son.

"And then I thought as soon as he’s gone, it’s my time. This is my decade.

"So he’s gone - he is 28 now. I love you Elliott but don’t come back.”

The star went on: “So now I just decided, I have hit 60, this decade is for me. And I am going to have fun.

"I am going to do what I want to do and I am going to come out from hiding away and just being this mum who was very like ‘this is my main priority’, and I just want to do things that are fun.”

“It started with me going into the jungle,” added the star, who was a contestant on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022.

What else did Sue Cleaver say?

Discussing Sister Act, the actor said it has been “great” returning to the stage. “I’ve just got a week’s rehearsal so I started on Monday,” she said.

“It’s very exciting. I am creaking everywhere because I have been at Pineapple Studios dancing away and the last time I was there was in the 80s with leg warmers.”

“I haven’t been on stage for so many years,” added Cleaver. “It’s been nearly 30 years now so yeah, it’s scary but also exciting and theatre was almost my first love. I am really going back to my roots.”

However, the star also assured Corrie fans that she would be returning to the cobbles.

“I have a few months grace to do this job and then I will be back in there as soon as I finish… I think that George and Eileen should have a big old-fashioned Corrie wedding,” she said.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV1 and ITVX.
