‘Coronation Street’ tonight: Will Fiz's wedding go ahead?

Soaps love a good ‘will they or won’t they’ storyline, and the wedding of Coronation Street’s Fiz Stape (Jennie McAlpine) — due to air tonight on ITV at 8pm — certainly lands in that category.

Fiz is set to marry partner Phill Whittaker (Jamie Kenna) after a whirlwind courtship involving a meddling mother-in-law, a pining ex and more than one bombshell.

As the nuptials rapidly approached, there was tension between Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) and Phill’s mum Mimi (Margot Leicester).

Evelyn was convinced Mimi was responsible for ruining the bridesmaid dresses; as well as bringing Phill’s ex-wife Camilla (played by former Emmerdale star Louise Marwood) to Weatherfield.

When Camilla announced she had proof that Phill still wanted her, Fiz and pal Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) caught them looking cosy. Phill insisted that he had not contacted Camilla, and Fiz believed him. Little did they know the situation was all down to Fiz’s troublesome daughter Hope (Isabella Flanagan).

A stressed Fiz also received a declaration of love from her ex, Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall). After cheating on Fiz last year, Ty eventually came to his senses and realised that she was the only one for him. But earlier this week, Fiz told him that while she’ll always love him, the trust was gone and so she was choosing Phill.

In tonight’s Coronation Street, the day gets off to a disastrous start when Phill and Fiz learn that the registrar has been cancelled. Eventually, the issue is resolved, and Tyrone gives Fiz a pair of earrings that belonged to Vera Duckworth (Liz Dawn) as a touching gift.

Tyrone and Evelyn take their seats at the venue as Fiz prepares to say her vows to Phill. But will they actually tie the knot, or could Fiz have a last minute change of heart? It’s clear she’s not over Tyrone, so is there still a chance for them?

If Fiz does decide to back out of the wedding, might she decide to stay single for a while after an eventful year?

Maybe she’ll become Mrs Whittaker after all, and commit to her new start with Phill. Or could something — or someone — prevent the ceremony from going ahead? We’re looking at you, Hope.

We can’t reveal which route Fiz will take, but we can promise a gripping instalment of Corrie. Actors McAlpine and Halsall are superb as ever, while co-star Kenna gives an equally strong performance.
