Coronation Street's Bernie may have uncovered a clue about Gary's murderous past after finding a watch

Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street's Bernie Winter could have unknowingly uncovered a clue to Gary Windass' dark secret tonight.

Last year, Gary (Mikey North) killed Rick Neelan in self-defence and buried his body in the woods.

Ever since then, he's being trying to make sure the secret stays buried.

But on tonight's episode (July 24) he had to content with Brian Packham and Bernie, who teamed up in the hope of finding treasure.

Brian had read that Roman coins had been found in the woods and decided he wanted to head up there with his metal detector to have a look for himself.

But when he mentioned this to Gary he put him off the idea, saying everyone would be looking in the woods now it was in the paper.

However, when Brian told Bernie what Gary had said, she mentioned seeing him putting a shovel in his car, which led the pair to decide to go to woods and beat Gary to finding the treasure.

But they were no match for Gary, who soon chased them out of the woods, leaving Brian shaking when they got back to the street.

When Gary arrived back, Bernie began shouting at him on the street and told him they were going to return to the woods.

But Gary wasn't taking any chances and decided to smash Brian's metal detector, without realising that Sarah was watching.

Gary apologised but Bernie accused him of criminal damage, while Brian said the trip to the woods was pointless anyway.

But, when Bernie was alone, she revealed she had found a watch with the words 'To Rick, love from Laura,' inscribed on the back.

Tonight's scenes set up as what will be the world's first socially distanced stunt, as Gary is hit by a car while trying to save Sarah next week.

The scene – which had to be reworked to take into account the restrictions – happens after Sarah finds out the truth about Gary's involvement in Rick Neelan's disappearance.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
