The government has revealed the areas which had the most new coronavirus cases in England last week.

Though Leicester remains the council area with the most new cases per 100,000 people in the week ending Sunday (5 July), the infection rate reduced from 141.3 to 116.0.

It comes after the government imposed a “local lockdown” on the East Midlands city on Monday last week having recorded a sharp spike in new cases.

Data released in Public Health England’s latest COVID-19 surveillance report on Thursday shows Rochdale had the second highest number of new cases, with 32.7 per 100,000 people.

Here are the 10 council areas in England with the highest COVID-19 infections per 100,000 people in the week ending 5 July. For the full list, go to the bottom of the page.

  1. Leicester 116.0 (down from 141.3)

  2. Rochdale 32.7 (down from 35.0)

  3. Bradford 31.8 (down from 45.8)

  4. Kirklees 29.9 (up from 26.2)

  5. Blackburn with Darwen 24.2 (up from 20.8)

  6. Rotherham 21.5 (down from 26.1)

  7. Bedford 19.8 (up from 18.1)

  8. Oldham 19.1 (down from 30.1)

  9. Barnsley 17.1 (down from 35.1)

  10. Peterborough 16.9 (down from 18.9)

The Public Health England report, which is released every Thursday, is important as it gives an accurate snapshot of the prevalence of COVID-19 across the country.

It combines “pillar 2” data (infections in the wider community) with “pillar 1” data (infections of NHS and care workers, as well as patients in hospitals). Pillar 2 data accounted for 75% of cases.
