Corrie and Love Island stars team up to address trolling

Coronation Street's Samia Longchambon and Love Island star Amy Hart have teamed up to address trolling.

The ITV soap has released a video the duo filmed on set, over a cup of tea at Roy's Rolls no less, where they discuss their real-life experiences with bullying online since becoming famous.

Longchambon is currently exploring on screen in Coronation Street as her character Maria Connor faces online abuse for her entry into local politics.

Longchambon has previously acknowledged the story has hit home for her, but now has explained how her own experiences differ somewhat from Maria.

"I have experienced trolling in a different way to Maria, but I was really pleased when Coronation Street said they were going to do the trolling storyline, because I think it is a current issue that unfortunately a lot of people have experienced," she said.

The actress went on: "For me personally, if I was watching Maria's storyline, it would help me to realise that I am not alone and that a lot of people go through this. I hope it makes people who might have left those nasty comments think twice about it in the future."

Amy Hart has worked significantly in the field of combating trolling since coming out of Love Island, where she was the victim of significant online abuse.

She spoke in parliament before the digital, culture, media and sport and frequently works with anti-bullying groups to support those impacted.

A Corrie super-fan, Amy said of this collaboration: "I think it's imperative that soap operas cover trolling and online bullying issues, as it shows the devastating effects to a mass audience of all ages. The sad truth is that trolls are all ages, genders and from all walks of life. I should know, as I have been sent abusive and upsetting messages by a whole range of people.

"Hopefully this powerful storyline will help break the negative trolling culture, and in turn may even save someone's life."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and streams on the ITV Hub.
