Coronation Street has revealed one of its biggest ever injustices, with Anna Windass receiving a jail sentence for a crime she didn't commit.

Anna was found guilty of GBH in Monday night's dramatic double bill (January 22), marking her departure from the show and leaving her arch-nemesis Pat Phelan triumphant yet again.

Phelan managed to frame Anna after Seb Franklin fell off a ladder while cleaning windows late last year.

Although Seb gave evidence in court in support of Anna, insisting that she didn't push him, his testimony was discounted after the court learned that Gary Windass and Tim Metcalfe had both pressured him into defending her.

Monday night's episodes ended with a traumatised Anna being locked up in her prison cell. We'll find out how long she's being sent down for later this week, when the Street gets news from her sentencing hearing.

Debbie Rush, who plays Anna, announced that she was quitting Coronation Street last July and filmed her final scenes late last year.

Although some Corrie fans had hoped that Anna would be the one to bring down Phelan once and for all, it seems that he'll be lying and scheming for a while yet.

Corrie fans shouldn't get too angry, though. Show insiders have revealed that Phelan's recent murder of Luke Britton was the beginning of the end for him, as future episodes will see him finding it increasingly difficult to keep his evil crimes under wraps.

Not only will Phelan have to deal with the return of Luke's sister Steph Britton soon, he'll also have his daughter Nicola plotting against him in secret.

Nicola Thorp, who plays Nicola, recently told Inside Soap: "Let's just say the net is closing in on Phelan, and Gary and Nicola join forces to figure out what he's hiding!

"Our own little Coronation Street drama is beginning to unfold, and Nicola means business. Meanwhile, her baby bump is getting bigger and bigger…"

She added: "If anyone found out the true extent of what Phelan has been up to, I think they would run a mile – but not Nicola.

"There are other people involved, and Nicola will stand up for what is right and do anything it takes to finally bring her father to justice – even if she's heavily pregnant at the time!"

Coronation Street spoilers for later this week have revealed that Nicola will soon apologise to Phelan, asking him for another chance. But as we already know that she'll be playing detective, could that all be an act?

Coronation Street continues on Wednesday (January 24) at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
