Corrie star Calum Lill shares nan's reaction to Joel twist

Coronation Street viewers finally discovered the truth last week about who attacked Lauren Bolton, as the soap aired the shock revelation that it was solicitor Joel Deering who had supposedly killed the missing teen – with Joel also shown to be grooming young sex worker Ellie.

Actor Calum Lill, who plays Joel, has since spoken out about the surprise twist, providing an update on how he expected his gran, who is a massive Corrie fan, to react to the news.

"I am going to try and watch it with her," he said. "It will be like watching a horror film, she will lose her mind, she might call the police, she will want to ring Dee-Dee. She has known my girlfriend for four years but she is very invested in Joel and Dee-Dee!"

Now that the big moment has been seen on screen, Lill has shared his grandmother's reaction to the reveal on TikTok, and she was every bit as horrified as the actor had predicted.

At the moment Joel was seen on screen beating Lauren, Lill's gran turned to look at him in shock and disgust, before saying, "You mean to tell me my grandson's a killer? You battered her! I can't believe that. Honest to goodness."

Lill joked that she then 'left in disgust' as she appeared to make a move to get up from the sofa.

Lill's followers weren't disappointed by her reaction, with one commenting, "She looked at you like it was CCTV footage of real-life events", while another joked, "That's you off the Christmas card list".

The actor previously revealed that his family had no idea that it was his character who was responsible for Lauren's disappearance, saying that they would be finding out "at the same time as the viewers".

"I don't think they were suspicious as they probably didn't think I could play an evil character like Joel," he said.

"I was having Sunday dinner with my family a couple of weeks ago, and they were all talking about their own theories of who they think it is. Every one of them has got a different one and not one of them thinks it is Joel."

The star also spoke about what's coming up for Joel, who is still keeping his secret about Lauren while representing Nathan Curtis, who has been arrested for Lauren's murder.

"I think he's trying to work out how many loose ends there could be and how to deal with them," he said, adding: "But this is new territory for him. He might have been in a situation before where he's broken the law and not treated people very nicely.

"But this is new and I think he feels real concern. He has to make it stick on Nathan so no-one ever suspects it could be Joel."

This week's episodes will also see Joel proposing to unsuspecting girlfriend Dee-Dee Bailey, who is completely unaware of Joel's dark side.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
