Coronation Street love rat Aidan Connor is in big trouble this week as Eva Price discovers that he's been cheating on her with Maria, but sneakily chooses not to reveal what she knows.

Eva, who's also reeling from the revelation that she's expecting Aidan's baby, decides to bide her time before getting the ultimate revenge on her unfaithful fiancé – but just how worried should he be?

Digital Spy and other media recently paid a visit to the Corrie set to hear Shayne Ward, who plays Aidan, reveal his thoughts on the ITV soap's big summer storyline.

So Aidan is ready to dump Eva for Maria, but then she tells him she's pregnant!

"Yes, it's terrifying for Aidan because now his feelings for Maria have definitely developed. He's been telling Maria that he's definitely going to end things with Eva, so Aidan had made his choice. It was genuine, too, he wasn't just giving himself some time to keep Maria onside.

"But Eva finds out about his affair with Maria and then finds out that she's pregnant. It's a massive spanner in the works for Aidan and he doesn't know what to do."

Does Eva seem excited when she tells Aidan about the baby?

"Excited and also scared, because she secretly knows about Aidan and Maria. Eva can do a great poker face, it's actually quite terrifying! Aidan doesn't know what to do. He is completely torn now there's a baby involved. It's a completely different ball game."

Is Aidan horrified or secretly delighted at the prospect of being a dad?

"Becoming a dad has never crossed his mind before. For Aidan, it's always been about impressing his own dad – that's what he's driven by. It's all about the factory. His dad has put him down time after time, but in the kind of way that makes him stronger. That's why Aidan and Johnny are always falling out.

"Aidan has never had time to think about being a dad so when it happens, it's like 'Oh my God – really?' But he's also delighted, though he doesn't know how to handle it."

Could Aidan perhaps finish with Eva but still be there for the baby?

"He could but, come on, this is soap. We don't want that! Seriously, he could do that but truth is he's never been in this position before and hasn't a bloody clue how to deal with it! He's scared about it and obviously when Maria finds out Eva is pregnant, all hell breaks loose."

What kind of reaction have you had in the street about this storyline?

"Oh, it's all heckles! At least it is from afar. When people come up close to me, they're always polite and ask for an autograph. It's great that the viewers get so involved over who they think Aidan should be with. They stay stuff like, 'How could you?' 'You shouldn't be with Eva. You should be with the other one' – or vice versa.

"It's nice people have invested so much and it's really going to kick off now and get much deeper. It's fun to hear the different kind of heckles I get!"

Who do most people want Aidan to be with?

"I think because he started off with Eva, it's probably her. But people will start to see he does have genuine feelings for Maria – he's fallen in love with her. So you'll see a complete change in him, in the way he is around her to the way he is with Eva. He does act differently with each of them.

"Aidan is on more of a sharp fuse with Eva because he feels he can't really engage in a proper conversation with her. With Maria, it's more adult."

As Shayne, do you feel sorry for both girls?

"Oh God yeah, but Maria's not entirely innocent as she instigated the affair second time around. However, I do feel sorry for both girls. No-one deserves to be treated like this. I feel a tiny amount of sympathy for Aidan, but not much because he's having his cake and eating it."

What's it like to have two women fighting over you on screen?

"I can't complain. It's great. I've known Cath and Samia for years and so everything is just easy in terms of working together. We have a great laugh – on and off screen. We make it as fun as possible and when we do a horrible scene and are shouting at each other, when it's over we're like, 'I'm sorry – didn't mean it!'."

Is it difficult getting into Aidan's headspace, given that his life is so different to yours?

"Surprisingly no. To be honest, though, now the storyline has developed, you'll see people being horrible to Aidan. There's a lot of shouting going on. After a while, you start to feel like it's real and after a real row the other night, I was asking the girls if we were still friends!"

We know Eva is going to have a big revenge plan brewing. What would hurt Aidan the most?

"I'd say if she does something to the business. He wants to build this enterprise. He's always wanted his dad to see him as the successor of the business. Aidan wants to impress Johnny, so, yeah, it would have something to do with Underworld. Eva's really not so ditzy as people make out."

Do you know where the storyline is going?

"Yes, I know now! It's been so well thought out. It's mental and I really want to tell everyone. All I'd say for now is that Aidan shouldn't have done this. Eva will stop at nothing to get her revenge."

How long is the story going to go for?

"All the way through the summer. Aidan finds himself in a place now where Eva's pregnant, so he's going to stay with her. That kind of shuts the door on him and Maria. Or does it? I think Aidan is going to end up quite a lonely person, because something's going to happen.

"It's healthy to mix things up. I've been here for two years now and you don't always want your character to be on top, in terms of being a successful businessman, or being in love and having everything. He needs a knock and he needs to be brought down a few pegs."

Do you see yourself staying on Corrie for a long time?

"Yeah, for as long as they want me!"

Would you say it's been a brave move to go from singing to acting?

"Yeah, it can be very unforgiving, especially on social media now. Back in the day it was just Digital Spy you'd go on to find out people's comments. Now your first scene comes on and people can either love you or hate you and it's a make or break thing.

"If you're not getting the public on side, then unless you have writers who 100% believe in you and think they can turn it around, a lot of the time they can say 'actually he's not working'. But Aidan feels perfect for me as a character and, touch wood, the writers will carry on being excited to write for him."

Coronation Street airs on Monday and Friday this week on ITV.
