Yahoo News Corrie won't be investigated for racial discrimination
Coronation Street will not be investigated after complaints of racial discrimination were made by viewers.
A total of15 people submitted complaints to Ofcom following a December 27 episode of the ITV soap, but after assessing the complaints, the regulator has decided that no further action needs to be taken.
The storyline over Christmas saw Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) finding herself being cut out of key business meetings.
She later discovers the associates that Aidan (Shayne Ward) has been meeting with – Justin and Dale Parker – are racists, and the Parkers made appalling, bigoted remarks towards Alya.
"Lighten up, will you? Oh, I'm sorry, you can't. You're stuck that colour," one of the Parkers said.
Actress Sair Khan revealed that she was the one who pitched the storyline.
"This was an issue that I definitely wanted to raise and wanted addressed, because I get a lot of people coming up to me, young Asian girls, Asian guys, that are so happy to see me on the television as a representation of them," she said in December.
"I'm so happy to be that voice for them in all the positive elements that come with that, but there is negativity and I thought that was definitely worth exploring."
A Coronation Street spokesperson also stressed that writers hope the storyline will help expose "completely abhorrent" racism that still runs rampant in society.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
