Corrosive Green Dye Thrown Over Anti-Corruption Activist in Kiev

Anti-corruption activists held a demonstration outside the special anti-corruption prosecutor’s office in Kiev, Ukraine on July 17, which culminated in counter protesters dousing leading activist Vitaliy Shabunin with a green dye.

The protesters were demanding the resignation of the special anti-corruption prosecutor after he closed an embezzlement case against the son of Ukraine’s interior minister, local news outlets said.

Counter protesters threw a green liquid that dyes the skin onto Shabunin, the head of an anti-corruption group, and then threw cakes at him.

The Anti-Corruption Action Center (AntAC), where Shabunin is a leader and activist, said police at the scene did not stop the attacks, though in this footage, two police officers grab the arms of Shabunin shortly after the dye was thrown on him.

AntAC posted a video after the incident on Facebook in which Shabunin appears with his face and hand stained green. His eyes are closed, he said, because the liquid causes burns, according to Reuters. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful
