THE council chief has praised a family-run pie shop as the best bakery in town.

Tomlins Bakery, which is now known as Tomlins Bakehouse following a recent revamp, was first opened in 1905 by Clarise and Lucy Holbrook.

George Tomlin bought the business on Synge Street in Orford from the Holbrook family just after the Second World War and transformed it into the popular bakery it still is today.

Over the past 118 years, customers have queued out of the door to buy one of Tomlins’ mouth-watering pies.

And the bakery, which was bought by Mark and Sonya Fitzpatrick tow years ago, is still as popular as ever.

Warrington Borough Council chief executive Steven Broomhead recently wrote to Mark and Sonya to wish the newly revamped bakery success, and to also praise its award-winning pies.

In a letter, Professor Broomhead said: “I wish your business every success in your revamped premises.

“A few years ago I joined a queue for one of your meat and potato delicious and award winning pies and it is good to know their quality means the demand is still there for you.

“Every success – best bakery in town.”

The owners shared the letter, which they said was a lovely, welcome surprise, on Facebook.

Many customers took to the comments to agree with the chief executive.

One person said: “Just been and bought my pies and cakes. Went early but still found a queue. Shows how popular and good the food is.”

Another said: “Wow, that is high praise indeed. Good on your both Mark and Sonya.”
