A woman has finally had her bin bags collected by the council after she put them out to be picked up half a year ago.

Mum-of-one Katie Curtis was faced with a disgusting smell and rats running around outside her house in Hull, Yorkshire, when the council failed to pick up the recyclable waste.

And despite reporting the issues multiple times, the rubbish sat outside her home for a staggering six months.

Miss Curtis said: “I reported the issue in September and I just kept getting fobbed off every time.

"I couldn’t recycle anything because there was already too much stuff and my black bin was already overflowing.

"I didn’t know what else to do, I was at the end of my tether.

"The rubbish was just piling up.

"It wasn’t just me that’s affected, but also my neighbour. We were completely forgotten about.”

She added: “The rubbish attracted vermin and created a horrendous smell.”

Hull City Council at first claimed that Miss Curtis had not been in contact with them over the issues with her blue bin collection - but they have now removed the waste after accepting that they were the ones at fault.

Miss Curtis added: "I feel vindicated now the council has admitted it was at fault.

"There will be a bulk collection to clear the backlog and it is a relief that my son will be able to play in the backyard once more.”

A Hull City Council spokesman admitted that their was a fault in their reporting system and apologised to Miss Curtis for the difficulties.

He added: “We are rectifying the situation immediately and the backlog will be cleared today.”

The council also said it will continue to listen to concerns from residents about the waste in the city.
