County, NW 4-H agreement up for vote

Apr. 5—New arena and facility for the New Waverly 4-H Club will be one step closer with the approval of an agreement with Walker County on the agenda for Monday's Commissioner Court.

The Walker County Commissioners Court will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, April 8, in the Walker County Courthouse, 1100 University Avenue, Room 104.

The initial terms of the agreement is for five years beginning Monday, and will renew for successive five year terms until given written notice.

According to the agreement, the New Waverly 4-H Community Club will construct an arena and supporting facilities. The Club's purpose is to carry out its mission to prepare youth to meet the challenges of childhood, adolescence and adulthood, through a coordinated, long-term, progressive series of educational experiences that enhance life skills and develop social, emotional, physical and cognitive competencies.

If the agreement is ever severed, the club will be expected to hand the property back over to the County "in as good condition" as handed over.

"The facility will provide a place to show and house animals, along with a place for 4-H clubs to meet," said Judge Colt Christian. "With a growing community, we are seeing an increase in enrollment for 4-H clubs like archery, shooting sports, robotics, and livestock categories. The county will also have a place to help as an animal shelter or supply drop off point during emergencies."

Other items of interest on the agenda include taking action to fix a water leak at the courthouse, reevaluating a contract with UTMB for 911 calls to TDCJ units in the county, implement reviews for Department Heads that work under the direct supervision of the court, new uniform contracts for Precinct 3, and extend health insurance for an employee on workers comp leave.

A grant is expected to be accepted from Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) for Heavy Trash and Tire Collection in the county for $32,000.

There are six items on the planning and development portion of the agenda. The agenda and packet for Commissioners Court is available online at co.walker.tx.us. Meetings are held on the first and third Monday of the month.
