Yahoo News Woman, 29, stabbed housemate 30 times in frenzied attack two days before she was due to be deported
A 29-year-old woman has been jailed after stabbing her housemate 30 times in a “barbarous” attack two days before she was due to be deported.
Awa Zongo also threw boiling water over her victim, who was left with a knife sticking out of her neck, in the frenzied attack at the home they shared in Wigan, Greater Manchester, in December last year.
A court heard that Zongo had been just two days away from being deported.
She was jailed for life with a minimum of seven years at Manchester Crown Court after pleading guilty to assault.
The court heard that police were initially called to the property at around 10.20am on 14 December last year to reports of a disturbance.
When they arrived, a woman in her 40s was being treated by paramedics in an ambulance and had a knife in her throat with just the handle protruding from her neck, Manchester Crown Court heard.
Zongo was seen stumbling out of a property towards the gate before deliberately throwing herself to the ground, feigning collapse.
She was accompanied to hospital by an officer and found to have superficial injuries.
An officer also travelled to hospital with the victim, who had to undergo surgery to remove the knife from her neck and also had more than 30 superficial stab wounds to her neck, thorax, abdomen and thighs.
In hospital it also transpired that she had also had boiling water thrown on her and had suffered burns to her face, shoulder, arm and back.
Zongo was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and charged with the offence, but the prosecution accepted a guilty plea to assault.
Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Constable Danny Ritchie said: “The victim in this barbarous attack is incredibly lucky to be alive.
“Thankfully, the serious wound that she sustained wasn’t fatal and I hope that she can feel a sense of closure after today’s verdict.
“My thoughts are with the victim as she continues to physically and mentally recover from this truly terrifying ordeal which has deeply affected her.
“Although she will never be able to forget what happened, we hope the fact that her attacker faces a spell behind bars will provide her with some comfort and enable her to move on with her life.”
