COVID-19: Boris Johnson announces £1,000 payment for 'wet pubs' in December

Boris Johnson has said there is a "compelling case" for further coronavirus restrictions - as he promised pubs which do not serve food a one-off payment of £1,000.

Pubs which do not serve food, or "wet pubs", are unable to operate if they are in Tier 2 or Tier 3 areas under the new system of restrictions which is likely to come into force tomorrow.

The prime minister made the announcement after saying the hospitality sector has been hit disproportionately hard in the pandemic.

Mr Johnson has spoken in the House of Commons ahead of a showdown with rebel Tory MPs.

Around 50 of Mr Johnson's own MPs are predicted to come out against the government in a vote to approve the tier system of coronavirus restrictions, in which 99% of the population face tough restrictions.

However, the prime minister is assured of victory after Sir Keir Starmer said Labour will abstain.
