Crayola is killing off one of its crayon colours for the first time in 100 years
National Crayon Day is coming up this Friday, March 31, and Crayola has found a rather cruel way to celebrate.
In a Game of Throne-like twist, the artists’ supplies company has decided to kill off one of the primary colours from its iconic pack of 24 crayons.
The manufacturer hasn’t yet revealed which one we’ll be bidding goodbye to, announcing over social media that it will live stream the decision on Crayon Day.
In the run up to the big reveal, Crayola has been encouraging fans to share images of the colour they can't imagine living without on social, accompanied by the hashtag #WhosLeaving.
The news has sparked a global debate on Twitter, with users arguing over which colour should should be the one to go.
Something BIG is happening at Crayola. On March 31st we’ll retire one of our
colors…and it might just be your favorite. #WhosLeaving pic.twitter.com/7MiwKGTRkk— Crayola (@Crayola) March 20, 2017
Many have argued that white is the obvious choice to get the boot - claiming that the colour is ‘useless’ on white paper.
On Friday, one of these colors gets the boot from @Crayola's Box of 24. I say #white needs to go. What say you? #nationalcrayonday pic.twitter.com/S6OHeax9pF

#WhosLeaving I say it's white. No one uses the white crayon. But who's gonna replace it? Can't have a 23-box of crayons, @Crayola, come on.

Others are backing the peach crayon to leave, threatening to riot if the decision doesn’t fall in their favour.
If they don't retire the white or the peach crayon, we riot. #WhosLeaving #crayons

Meanwhile, many have used the opportunity to voice their distaste over the ‘ugly’ yellow green colour.

Not a fan of yellow green . Cannot wait to find out #WhosLeaving

Another tweeter was more cynical about the stunt, tweeting: “Let me guess...23 crayons for the price of 24.”

The current colours that make up a Crayola box are red, yellow, blue, brown, orange, green, violet, black, carnation pink, yellow orange, blue green, red violet, red orange, yellow green, blue violet, white, violet red, dandelion, cerulean, apricot, scarlet, green yellow, indigo and grey.
Fans that are keen for their favourite colour to stay, can share their opinion with the Twitter hashtag #shareyourfave.
But you'll have to think hard before you do, because once the colour is retired, Crayola say they will not produce any more crayons in that shade - only boxes that already contain that specific colour will remain.
