Paramount+ has released the first trailer for crime drama The Serial Killer's Wife, ahead of its release next month.

Based on Alice Hunter's bestselling book of the same name, the four-part series follows a married couple whose perfect life is changed when the police arrive at their house one evening.

"Set in a family home nestled in an idyllic English town, Beth Fairchild (Annabel Scholey) has prepared a surprise birthday party for her husband Tom (Jack Farthing)," begins the official synopsis for the series.

"With most of the village present, as Tom is the beloved local doctor, Beth's world is turned upside down when the party is interrupted by the police and Tom is arrested for the murder of his former assistant.

"Beth believes her husband has been wrongly accused but she soon makes some shocking discoveries that cast doubt on his innocence. As she confides her worries to Adam (Luke Treadaway), Tom's best friend from childhood, further developments see Beth begin to realise not everything in her supposedly idyllic life is as it seems."

The spine-tingling trailer sees Scholey's character Beth coming to terms with her husband's shocking arrest, following the murder of his assistant.

As more murders are brought to the attention of the police, Beth is then seen questioning whether she really knew her partner at all.

"It's just the start of this very twisted story and I hope viewers will be as gripped watching it as we were in piecing it all together," said the Doctor Who actress of her exciting role in the series.

The drama also stars Waterloo Road's Angela Griffin as DI Aline Edgeworth, as well as Shetland's Julie Graham, Inside No.9's Shobna Gulati, Holby City's Hari Dhillon and Morgana Robinson.

The Serial Killer's Wife launches exclusively on Paramount+ on December 15.
