'Crime is the only thing flourishing in Scotland' Record readers fume as most dangerous areas revealed by government

The areas in Scotland with the highest and lowest crime rates have been revealed by the Scottish Government. Between 2023 and 2024, the national rate of total recorded crime was 550 crimes per 10,000 population — marking an increase from 531 in 2022-23.

The top three cities with the highest crime rate is Dundee City followed by Glasgow and then Edinburgh, all of which have shown a significant increase in crime since last year. Dundee city recorded 847 crimes over the last year per 10,000 people and not far behind lurks Glasgow city with 812 crimes and Edinburgh City with 679 crimes.

Each of these cities have all had a big increase in crime between 2023 and 2024. Rounding out the top five areas of Scotland with the highest crime rates are West Dunbartonshire and Aberdeen City, with 672 and 663 respectively.

Meanwhile, the Shetland Islands is the area of Scotland with the lowest crime rate. With 215 total recorded crimes per 10,000 population, it is far below the country-wide average of 550. This is followed by the Orkney Islands, with 237 crimes.

Reader johnmike expressed: "Crime is the only thing flourishing in Scotland. Perhaps money spent on these surveys would be better spent on catching offenders."

Commenter Paul NLanarkshire argued: "How many crimes in Dundee were committed by Glaswegians?" sosomanysadoa furiously said: "Just imagine what these figures would look like if the police were doing the job they were actually paid to do instead of hiding."

bluebellsareblue wrote: "Looking at Scotland as a whole, overall crimes recorded by the police increased this year according to the data. That’s not counting the 500 odd hoodlums being released early from prison."

According to the government report, an estimated 29 per cent of all crime is reported to the police.

BENGUNN pointed out: "That means 71% is not reported therefore the information in the article measuring crime rate figures in areas is incomplete and inaccurate. The sad thing is the number of crimes not reported as people already know the police are useless. Good grief they cannot even manage the 29% figure." Paul NLanarkshire responded: "I doubt even 29% is reported."
