Beyond Katherine Kelly's recent role as an academic-turned-murder-suspect in ITV's summer series Cheat, the actress has played a detective in Happy Valley series 2, will play a detective in Liar's second instalment, and – yes – plays the lead detective inspector in Netflix's new series Criminal.

The 12-part crime procedural, which is set in the UK, France, Germany and Spain, unfolds in an interrogation suite, and occasionally the double-mirrored observation room, and so the focus is solely on the suspect's behaviour and their interaction with the police.

While Kelly joked that actors would be out of work if they didn't take police officer roles with the amount of crime thrillers around, the star said she's now ready for a new challenge.

"I play a detective inspector in Liar 2, I play a DI in this, I have to draw the line now!" Kelly quipped to Digital Spy. "I need a break! I think they are so popular, the police procedurals, all actors do them, and if you didn't, you wouldn't work otherwise!

"And you do switch from side to side, and I'm definitely ready for a bit more on the other side [as a suspect]. I'm joking about it, my character in Liar is nowhere near as repressed as Hobbs [in Criminal] – they're very different. But I definitely like to do what I haven't done, and I mean that in theatre, TV and radio – not just the part, the project too."

Kelly stars alongside Lee Ingleby, Rochenda Sandall, Shubham Saraf, and Nicholas Pinnock in Criminal. Guest stars include David Tennant, Hayley Atwell and Youssef Kerkour. There are three episodes per country.

Criminal is available to stream on Netflix now.
