Benedict Cumberbatch is known for playing iconic characters like Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Strange and (to a lesser extent) Smaug the Terrible.

His latest project, The Child in Time, is still a big deal (because Benedict Cumberbatch) but on the whole, it's a lot more low-key than his usual mega-franchises - and that's just how he likes it.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the actor said; "It's great playing a man who drinks cups of tea, has normal conversations, daydreams, doodles on a pad and isn't talking at a million miles an hour or firing energy out of his hands."

Translation: he just wants to drink tea while filming (basically).

Based on Atonement writer Ian McEwan's novel, Benedict will play a children's author who is struggling to deal with the disappearance of his daughter - made all the more difficult by her strange, supernatural reappearances.

"It might look like an odd choice for a new father to be tackling a drama about losing a child," he muses.

"It worked for me because it's a London shoot, and I've got a newborn."

The star previously told Digital Spy that his role took him to a "very dark space" and worked to leave it out of his personal life.

And while we're speaking of his Sherlock break, we're still a ways away from another series. Sorry about that.

The Child in Time airs Sunday, September 24 at 9pm on BBC One.
