Sherlock and Avengers star Benedict Cumberbatch is making his return to TV in a one-off drama at the end of this week, called The Child in Time.

Based on Atonement writer Ian McEwan's novel, Cumberbatch will play a children's author who is struggling to deal with the disappearance of his daughter - made all the more difficult by her strange, supernatural reappearances.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media outlets, the Doctor Strange star explained that he took himself to a "very dark space" for the role.

"During the day, it's pretty exhausting," he explained, "you have to take of yourself, it's a very dark place to go to.

"It's basically breaking down for an entire day... but that's what the drama demands, and it's a very human experience that [my character] goes through.

"The pain of what that must be like for people who experience that is unfathomable, so you don't want to bring that into your own domestic space."

Cumberbatch also explained that he has no plans to give up film or TV to exclusively focus on the other, saying that each brings its own challenges to him as an actor.

But, as it stands, there's a lot more movie than TV work on the horizon for him: two Avengers movies, The Current War, The Grinch, The (other) Jungle Book and Gypsy Boy. Sorry Sherlock fans, but we're a ways away from any more.

The Child in Time airs Sunday, September 24 at 9pm on BBC One.
