Customer complains about finding 14 plastic bags inside his ‘bagless’ Dyson vacuum cleaners

A customer has complained about the amount of packaging inside his his two newly-purchased ’bagless’ Dyson vacuum cleaners.

Phil Swift, 68, from Downend, Bristol, bought the cordless Dyson V8 Animal and Dyson V7, but was frustrated to find 14 plastic bags inside surrounding the cleaners’ detachable parts.

He contacted his local council but said they told him the bags were not recyclable and he should put them in the bin.

‘Each piece was individually wrapped in its own plastic bag,’ said Mr Swift, a keen environmentalist.

‘I rang South Gloucestershire Council to ask what to do with it all, and they just told me I had to put it in the bin.

‘What’s going to happen to it now? Will it end up in landfill? Will it end up in the sea?

‘It’s terrible. We’re always told we have to cut down the amount of plastic we use. But here’s a good example of where I didn’t choose to end up with 14 plastic bags, and I am now told I have to throw them away.’

Mr Swift said the packaging hit a nerve with him as he has been watching BBC nature programme Blue Planet II, which depicted the damaging effects of floating plastic on marine life.

‘I sat here with my new Dyson and it dawned on me that there must be thousands of people opening their new Dysons every day,’ he said.

‘That’s thousands and thousands and thousands of these plastic bags.’

A spokeswoman for Dyson said the plastic bags in the packaging could be recycled at a supermarket if local councils will not pick them up.

‘Dyson engineers do more with less, reducing the amount of materials we use without compromising the high performance of our machines,’ she said.

‘And just like our products, our packaging is continually evolving to minimise environmental impact while ensuring our machines are delivered without damage.’

She said ’85 per cent of the cardboard used in Dyson packaging is recycled and we encourage our owners to recycle responsibly’.
