A cyclist has died after suffering serious head wounds during a crash on Dartmoor. The man, aged 56, was found at around 3.40pm on Sunday, May 12 on Shapley Common, near Moretonhampstead by search and rescue teams who contacted the Devon Air Ambulance and the South Western Ambulance Service.

Devon and Cornwall Police were also called to the incident and a spokesperson has confirmed a crash involving a cyclist took place on the B3212. A 56-year-old man was found on the verge.

Despite receiving medical attention, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

A police spokesperson said: "Police were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a bicycle on the B3212 on Shapley Common, near North Bovey, Moretonhampstead, at around 3.40pm on Sunday 12 May. South West Ambulance Service, Devon Air Ambulance and Devon & Cornwall Police attended the incident.

"A 56-year-old male pedal cyclist was located on the verge. Despite the efforts of those attending, he was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. The B3212 between Challacombe Cross and Jurston Cross was closed while police investigated this collision. The road reopened at around 7.20pm."

Posting to social media, Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Ashburton said: “It was the 62nd Ten Tors event this year and once again our volunteers and those from the other 3 Dartmoor Search and Rescue teams, Devon 4x4 and other organisations were heavily involved supporting the Army with their event.

“It’s always a pleasure to take part and it’s great to see so many young people putting themselves to the test and taking part despite what Dartmoor throws at them. This year one of their biggest challenges were the unusually high temperatures. Our congratulations all of the participants.

“On Sunday afternoon our team were also first on scene when a cyclist was found with serious head injuries on the roadside near our control vehicle. Our volunteers remained with the cyclist until handing over to the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and South West Ambulance Service Trust Paramedics.”
