A cyclist was found with serious head injuries by the roadside on Dartmoor on the afternoon of Sunday, May 12. A search and rescue teams found the injured party and were first on the scene before handing the casualty over to Devon Air Ambulance.

It is not clear how the cyclist came to be injured. Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Ashburton were in the area as one of multiple search and rescue teams helping ensure safety during this year's Ten Tors challenge on Dartmoor.

Thousands of people took part in the 62nd Ten Tors over from Friday, May 10, to Sunday, May 12. It was the hot weather that proved to be one of the biggest challenges the teams taking part faced. It is believed that no participants suffered any serious injuries during the challenge, the injured cyclist being the most serious incident dealt with by crews over the weekend.

Posting to social media, Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Ashburton said: “It was the 62nd Ten Tors event this year and once again our volunteers and those from the other 3 Dartmoor Search and Rescue teams, Devon 4x4 and other organisations were heavily involved supporting the Army with their event.

“It’s always a pleasure to take part and it’s great to see so many young people putting themselves to the test and taking part despite what Dartmoor throws at them. This year one of their biggest challenges were the unusually high temperatures. Our congratulations all of the participants.

“On Sunday afternoon our team were also first on scene when a cyclist was found with serious head injuries on the roadside near our control vehicle. Our volunteers remained with the cyclist until handing over to the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and South West Ambulance Service Trust Paramedics.”
