A 51 year old man has died after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest while taking part in a 100-mile charity bike ride. Michael Gronow, who was taking part in the CARTEN100 on Saturday, May 11, collapsed after leaving Johnstown in Carmarthenshire. Emergency services were on the scene "almost immediately" but Mr Gronow could not be saved.

The CARTEN 100 annual event sees more than 1,800 cyclists ride for 10 hours from Cardiff City Hall to Tenby Harbour. It has been running since 2004 with the main aim of getting "people on their bikes without the pressure of it being a 'race'". Most riders raise money for their chosen charity while taking part, reports Wales Online.

A statement from the organisers said: "With deep sadness we can confirm the passing away of a rider in the 2024 CARTEN100. Michael Gronow, 51 suffered a suspected cardiac arrest leaving Johnstown. The emergency services were on the scene almost immediately and reacted with great speed and professionalism."

"This is a terrible tragedy for his wife, family, and friends. Everyone involved in the organisation of The CARTEN100 would like to express their sincere condolences. Our deepest sympathies go out to them." It has not been confirmed but it is believed Mr Gronow is from Cardiff.
