DACC plans series of events to 'Inspire and Transform'

Feb. 6—DANVILLE — Throughout the year, the Danville Area Community Center will host various lectures as part of its new series "DACC Inspire and Transform: Changing Lives Events."

The series, supported by the Degenstein Foundation, will address topics including adolescent emotional health, youth suicide, overcoming emotional trauma, healthy lifestyles, fitness, mindfulness, stress reduction and overall wellness.

The first lecture will feature Dr. Paul Kettlewell, retired pediatric psychologist and professor emeritus, Department of Psychiatry, Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. Kettlewell will present insights and strategies for parents and teenagers to successfully manage mental health challenges, according to the DACC.

Kettlewell recently helped oversee the mental health task force within the Danville Area School District to support mental health among teens and adolescents.

Kettlewell said he support the DACC's initiatives.

"I support the DACC, I support all of Danville and surrounding communities," he said. "I support teens and their parents who need this information. We've got keep this going."

The lecture will be a hybrid event held at 6:30 p.m. March 5 in the ballroom of the Pine Barn Inn and online. Pre-registration is required.

In the spring, Danielle Empson, director, McDowell Institute, Bloomsburg University, and Dr. Tim Knoster, professor of exceptionality programs, McDowell Institute, Bloomsburg University, will host a lecture addressing teen suicide, the DACC said.

This fall, Sarah Dobeck Troutman, director of behavioral and mental health, Susquehanna Valley United Way, will address identifying and overcoming trauma, according to the community center.

"The series has several objectives ... to educate everyone about knowledge and strategies to enhance their emotional, mental health and physical well-being," the DACC said. "We hope to inspire and foster a sense of unity and support within the regional Valley communities, especially during challenging times."
