Armed police swooped on a busy area of east London last night after a young man was shot.

Scotland Yard said a 27-year-old man was found injured in De Beauvoir Square, Hackney, after being shot near Kingsland Road at about 1am on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital, where he is said to be in a stable condition. His injuries are not life-threatening.

A 20-year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of attempted murder, police said. He remains in custody at an east London police station.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The Trident and Area Crime Command has been informed.

“Enquiries continue to establish the exact scene of the shooting.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact officers via 101 quoting reference 517/22 July.”

Kingsland Road was closed in both directions for several hours after the shooting.
