Dan Walker says 'nice to be back' as he claps back after Channel 5 viewers brand appearance a 'disgrace'

Dan Walker was left clapping back at Channel 5 viewers after some branded his appearance on the programme's latest news bulletin a 'disgrace'. The former BBC Breakfast host has been fronting Channel 5 News since June 2022, making his debut by reporting live from 10 Downing Street when then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson survived a no-confidence vote.

Fast forward and on Monday (April 8), Dan hosted the first show of the week wearing a smart navy suit over a crisp white shirt. However, it was Dan’s choice of footwear that rubbed some of those watching at home up the wrong way.

The 47-year-old opted for a pair of navy, leather trainers which cost £299 from luxury footwear brand, Oliver Sweeney. Sharing a snap from his first news bulletin of the week, Dan wrote to his 302,000 followers: “So… a few viewers got in contact about my shoes on @c5news tonight."

He went on to say: "Personally, I think there are far more important things going on in the world and I don’t believe wearing these counts as a ‘disgrace’ or the dropping of ‘standards’. They aren’t trainers and I think they are smart and I love them. What do you think? P.S. nice to be back. P.P.S for those asking they are @oliversweeney.”

But it appears not everyone agreed with Dan's stance. @nexus1440 said: "Not appropriate for reading the news.,regardless of it being channel 5 . But def wouldn’t go as far as calling them a disgrace." @helen.f.davis.9 replied: "Sorry, Dan. Love you but it's a no from me re. your shoes. Well you have asked!"

Others, however, didn't see the problem. @jameslatham_ commented: "Crikey…it’s Channel 5 News, not the State Opening of Parliament! Perspective people.." @hoblouise replied: "How sad some people are! Get a grip there is a lot more awful news going on around the world! I love them Dan you always look very dapper on the news!"

@gill.whelan echoed: "Blimy done people need to get a grip! What does it matter what sort of shoes you wear on the news????" @stephjones_250195 added: "There's nothing wrong with them at all. People have nothing better to do than judge."
