Danny Dyer has recalled some hazy memories of his stag do, admitting that it "got very messy".

The former EastEnders star makes a cameo appearance in new BBC comedy Henpocalypse!, about a group of women who go away for a weekend of hard drinking ahead of a wedding but unexpectedly find themselves in the middle of the apocalypse.

Dyer, 46, plays a version of himself when one woman, who idolises him, begins to see him in her dreams after developing gangrene in her leg.

Looking back on his own stag do ahead of his 2016 wedding to Joanne Mas, Dyer said: "My stag weekend was meant to be sophisticated.

"We went to Port Lympne Safari Park and stayed in a treehouse, which was an animal kingdom and we were going to go on a safari, but I didn't see any animals, in fact it got very messy.

"I did see some monkeys though."

Dyer also offered some tips to anyone heading off on a stag or hen weekend.

He said: "To survive a stag do, you need to try and pace yourself, which is difficult when you’re out with the lads celebrating."

Dyer, who discovered he was descended from royalty in an episode of Who Do You Think You Are?, told how Henpocalypse! writer Caroline Moran had really understood him in writing his lines, saying: "I'm very articulate and quite whimsical."

He added: "There is an argument to say that all actors play their self in a way and more of a heightened version of their self, but I think this was a bit of a homage to me, and that's why I had to say yes.

"We filmed in two days, and I came over and it was an amazing set and crew, so I loved every second playing Danny Dyer."

Kate O'Flynn, who plays injured Dyer fan Jess, said that she had loved working with him in the dream sequence scenes.

She said: "I had a real laugh with him - it was a mad three days of filming and we got quite hysterical at some points and once he'd gone it felt like some crazy fever dream."

O'Flynn added: "There were a couple of phrases in the script that Danny would be like 'I wouldn't say that', and I guess he's the expert, right? It must have been quite surreal to be playing Jen's fantasy version of himself, but he was so up for it and such easy company."

Henpocalypse! starts on Tuesday 15 August at 10pm on BBC Two.
