Sir David Jason 'would love' Only Fools and Horses return, but says it won't happen

David Jason is up for playing Del Boy again, but Only Fools and Horses is unlikely to return to our TV screens.

Sir David Jason is 83 years old, but that doesn't mean he has finished making us all laugh. In fact, he'd love to reprise his most famous character — Only Fools and Horses wheeler-dealer Del Boy — one more time.

The comedy legend told The Sun he'd jump at the chance to play the Cockney catchphrase machine again, but he doesn't think it will ever happen following the death of series creator John Sullivan.

"I don’t think we could do another episode of Only Fools And Horses because the brains behind it, Mr John Sullivan, is unfortunately no longer with us," said Jason.

Sullivan, who also created The Green Green Grass and wrote sketches for The Two Ronnies, passed away in 2011 at the age of 64.

The writer was responsible for all 64 episodes of the show, which were broadcast between 1981 and 2003. But that doesn't mean Jason will ever definitively say goodbye to Del Boy.

He said: "To be honest with you, we would like [more Only Fools and Horses] to happen very much because not only did we enjoy it so much, but so did most of the British public. Because of that, we would love to do it."

Jason reprised Del Boy in 2014 for a Sport Relief special. Meanwhile, Del Boy returned in stage form in 2019 as part of a West End musical adaptation of the show, penned by Paul Whitehouse and Sullivan's son Jim.

That show will embark on a tour of the UK and Ireland in late 2024, though we don't know whether existing cast members — including Tom Bennett as Del Boy — will return.

Jason, meanwhile, is about to return to our TV screens with a new show alongside The Repair Shop's Jay Blades, in which the duo travel the UK visiting steam fairs and air shows to meet talented craftspeople.

David & Jay’s Touring Toolshed airs on BBC Two on Monday 22 January.
