Dale Winton news: David Walliams breaks down in tears as he reveals he was ‘always worried’ for late friend

David Walliams tearfully admitted that he was “always worried” about good friend Dale Winton as he discussed his death in an emotional interview.

The Little Britain star said that he had been concerned about his long-time friend in recent years as his fame started to fade.

Winton was found dead at his London home at the age of 62 on Wednesday, his agent confirmed.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Front Row, Walliams said: “He absolutely lived for showbusiness. I was always worried for him, inevitably it [fame] does go away.

“You have your moment in the sun, you're still working but you're not quite where you were.”

Paying tribute to the much-loved Supermarket Sweep host, Walliams said he was just the same off screen as he was on screen.

“People on TV there's often a bit of a mask, people show a certain side of them, but with Dale the two were as close as they could be,” he said.

“He was one of the funniest people I have ever met, funny intentionally and unintentionally.

"He was absolutely outrageous and had such a camp sense of humour, which is probably why I was drawn to him.”

Walliams revealed that the death of Winton’s mother, who took her own life just days after his 21st birthday, affected his outlook on love and relationships.

“I just wish he was able to find happiness himself, but I think he was so devastated by what happened to his mother when he was so young, he found it hard,” he said.

“He absolutely worshipped her, he found her, that sort of thing you never really get over.”

He added: “The most awful thing...he used to tell me he had this terrible guilt as his mum had asked him if he was gay and he said no and he felt this terrible guilt that he hadn't told her the truth."

Shortly after the sad news was announced on Wednesday evening, the Britain’s Got Talent judge posted a series of memories and anecdotes about the star on Twitter.

Walliams and Winton were firm friends, with the Supermarket Sweep presenter often appearing on Walliams’ comedy show Come Fly with Me also starring Matt Lucas.
