‘The Day I Became a Bird’ Video Game Adaptation in Development at Passion Pictures, Hyper Luminal Games: Demoing in Annecy (EXCLUSIVE)

From MIFA’s new XR&Games Area, three-time Oscar-winning production company Passion Pictures has revealed it’s working with Hyper Luminal Games to develop a new video game adaptation of the studio’s animated short “The Day I Became a Bird.”

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker and Passion co-founder Andrew Ruhemann, “The Day I Became a Bird” is based on Ingrid Chabbert and Guridi’s book of the same name. The story follows a boy who transforms into a bird to win the affection of a girl in his class.

In the game adaptation, which is demoing an early version in the XR&Games Area, players will follow a similar narrative aimed at creating a “cozy gaming experience.”

Passion Games Managing Director Lucie Friar tells Variety, “At Passion, both our Games and Original IP teams have grown over the last five years with increasing crossover, so it has been a natural progression to take our knowledge of both and create this game with Hyper Luminal Games. This is a milestone moment for us as a team and a company to finally see one of our original films evolve into an immersive interactive experience.”

Ruhemann says the project “presents us with a unique way to explore the story and find new ways to connect with players on a deeply emotional level.”

Hyper Luminal Games co-founder and creative director Rob Madden adds, “We are thrilled to be bringing such a beautiful story to the gaming community and for this story to find a perfect home on our publishing label Little Nook.”

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Hyper Luminal develops colorful indie games such as “Pine Hearts,” “Cloud Jumper” and “Big Crown.”
