Deadpool 2 writers agonised over killing that character

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Deadpool 2.

Ryan Reynolds has revealed Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick agonised over the decision to kill off Wade's girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin).

The film actually starts with the shocking twist, which sends Wade into such deep despair that he tries to kill himself (unsuccessfully) within the film's first half an hour.

The decision has proved controversial, with critics accusing the writers of employing the maligned comic book trope of 'fridging', which considers the death of a female character no more than a plot device to prompt vengeance from the male hero.

Whatever your opinion, in a recent interview, Deadpool actor Reynolds said "it was a really tough decision" to kill her off.

"It was a really tough decision, because we love that character and we love [Morena Baccarin]," he told Empire magazine.

"We were really worried about that. In order for Deadpool to function like Deadpool, you need to to put him in a position in which he's not just the underdog, but that he's really lost everything.

"The character's so outrageous and so obnoxious and so crazy that if he had everything, everything was in a good place in his life, you can't really turn up the fun.

"The more pain Deadpool's in, the funnier Deadpool can be, or the more ridiculous Deadpool can be, or outlandish. So we really only had the one thing to take, and that was Vanessa. It was something we agonised over forever."

He added: "Vanessa was kind of unfortunately the only catalyst we had to propel Deadpool into the depths of despair.

"It was definitely something we went back and forth on, and boy, we had disagreements at different times."

Reynolds' revelation follows several complaints about the film's female characters, including the implementation of the Asian hair streak trope with Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna).
