Decision on Leeds United loanee made as Championship-bound club announce retained list

Championship-bound Burnley have confirmed Connor Roberts will return to Turf Moor following the conclusion of his loan spell at Leeds United. The Wales international moved to Elland Road on deadline-day in the winter transfer window but has found regular first team football hard to come by.

Injuries have hampered Roberts since his temporary switch. The form of Archie Gray and Sam Byram at full-back in the second half of the season has also impacted his game time.

The Clarets, relegated from the Premier League over the weekend, have today published their retained list, confirming Roberts is due to return to Lancashire following the Championship play-off final. “Connor Roberts, CJ Egan Riley, Anass Zaroury, Samuel Bastien, Darko Churlinov, Michael Obafemi, Owen Dodgson, Luke McNally, Scott Twine, Wout Weghorst, Michael Mellon and Dara Costelloe all return to the club after loan spells away,” a section of Burnley's club statement read.

Roberts is expected to be included in the matchday squad when the Whites face Southampton at Wembley on Sunday. Given United's performance in the second leg of their play-off semi-final second leg against Norwich City, it is unlikely Roberts will be selected in the starting XI this weekend.

Eleven of Roberts' 14 appearances in Whites colours have come from off the bench. His only goal came in United's stirring comeback at home to promotion rivals Leicester City.

Defensive reinforcements will be high on the Whites' priority list going into next season. Borussia Dortmund full-back Marius Wolf is the latest name to be linked with United.
