Eight-part miniseries The Defenders pulled off an unexpected twist at the end of episode six, which left fans stunned.

Sigourney Weaver's character Alexandra was hyped up as the Big Bad for the superhero team-up show. But the writers threw that out of the window, after killing her off much earlier than expected.

And it wasn't one of the superheroes who was behind it either, nor Stick (Scott Glenn) who was killed by Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung) earlier in the episode.

Alexandra, on a high after Elektra successfully kidnapped Danny Rand (Finn Jones) for her, delivered a powerful and empowering speech to her fellow members of The Hand, insisting that she is indeed the true leader of their shady organisation.

But as her speech came to a close, she was (literally) stabbed in the back by Elektra.

Elektra made things final by decapitating her boss (so she cannot be revived), and forced Madame Gao, Murakami, and Bakuto to fall in line as she announced herself as the new leader of The Hand.

Marco Ramirez, one of the showrunners of The Defenders, boiled down the decision behind the shock twist, explaining that they wanted to keep things from being too predictable.

"Part of it was just about giving the audience a little something unexpected," he told Entertainment Weekly.

"Audiences I think sometimes expect that a major storyline or major character is going to end in the ultimate or penultimate episode, so they go, 'Oh all right, something's going to happen here at the end of the story.'

"So it just felt like a jolt, and it was exciting to write."

Ramirez added that Alexandra was always meant to service Elektra's arc.

"The second part was really in a way we introduced Sigourney's character a little bit to highlight Elektra's story," he said. "I like to think that we wrote a really fun, cool character for Sigourney, but really it was also a way for us to say this is the journey that Elektra is going on."

The Defenders is available to watch on Netflix right now.
